You have to believe that there is a complete picture out there and you are approaching it step by step through conjectures and refutations. And this effectively means that nobody has the ultimate truth, with which many radicals such as the communists disagree.

When Galileo said that the book of the world is written in Mathematics, this was just a vision.Then came Descartes, who declared that the book should be written in equations. Finally Newton came along and wrote the book with his equations.

I believe Einstein was right in saying that God does not play dice. The universe may just be super-deterministic,but we simply do not have sufficient knowledge about the physics at the super small scales. And therefore you have to play dice when you are not smart enough to know the complexity underneath. Looking at the two extremes of small and large scales in the physical world, we are fairly sure that our scientific knowledge is limited whilst the unknown is infinite.
